The Dakota Nitinol Stone Retrieval Device with OpenSure Handle allows physicians to release and capture kidney stones of several sizes, from complex stones as large as 10 millimeters to fragments as small as one millimeter.
The device is said to be capable of removing complex stones as large as 10 millimeters to smaller fragments of one millimeter size.
UC San Diego Health Comprehensive Kidney Stone Center director Roger Sur, M.D. said: “The Dakota Retrieval Device with OpenSure Handle offers innovative technology that helps me solve some of the challenges faced during ureteroscopy procedures.
“I can extract a variety of stone sizes and compositions and make multiple passes during one procedure to help patients become stone free.”
The new kidney stone remover is said to have multiple features for physicians to help them quickly assess kidney stones with different clinical characteristics.
Designed to release a large, complex kidney stone, the OpenSure Handle is expected to cut down the procedure time besides potentially reducing the chances of any complications associated with ureteroscopy.
According to Boston Scientific, physicians can capture, reposition and remove multiple stones and small fragments in the same procedure through the nitinol hybrid grasper basket of the device.
Consisting of three arms, the nitinol hybrid basket opens and closes at full deflection, thereby aiding physicians in reaching stones which otherwise would be difficult to remove from challenging anatomic areas.
Boston Scientific Urology and Pelvic Health senior vice president and president said: “As a hybrid basket and grasper, it can help streamline the most challenging stone removal procedures and improve patient outcomes.”
In other development, Boston Scientific acquired the LumenR Tissue Retractor System from LumenR.
