Biomet, a manufacturer of orthopedic and biotechnology products, has received Japan's Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW) grant of premium reimbursement pricing for the company's E1 Antioxidant Infused Technology hip bearing.

The E1 hip bearing is a technology that utilizes antioxidants to stabilize the bearing material.

Biomet‘s E1 Antioxidant Infused Technology prevents oxidative degradation, and, in laboratory testing, the E1 bearings demonstrated a 95% to 99% reduction in wear compared to gamma sterilized polyethylene.

Biomet said the E1 technology was listed on 1 November 2010 by Japan’s National Insurance.

Biomet International president Wil Boren said they are gratified that the Japanese MHLW has recognized the technological advances as incorporated into Biomet’s E1 bearing.

"We believe this decision will allow greater access to E1 technology for Japanese patients who will benefit from Biomet’s advanced hip offering," Boren said.
