Bayer MaterialScience's medical antimicrobial plastics including antimicrobial polycarbonate grades and antimicrobial polycarbonate/acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (PC/ABS) grade can facilitate manufacturers to improve protection against bacteria growth in medical equipment and devices.

The three antimicrobial grades of Makrolon polycarbonate including AM1825 is a lipid-resistant, radiation-stabilized and high-viscosity thermoplastic which is used for translucent medical device applications.

The radiation-stabilization technology of AM1825 decreases discoloration resulting from gamma or e-beam radiation.

Makrolon AM2428 is a high-performance antimicrobial plastic which includes an internal mold release agent and Makrolon AM2520 delivers a correct balance between processibility, impact resistance and mechanical strength and is also radiation stabilized.

The antimicrobial PC/ABS blend in Bayer’s portfolio provides flame-retardant capabilities and a naturally opaque color.

Bayer MaterialScience Polycarbonates Medical and Consumer Products market segment leader Bruce Fine said manufacturers turn to its antimicrobial plastics portfolio for applications in drug delivery, surgical instruments and IV access systems.

"While each grade has its own attributes, all provide a good balance of mechanical properties and processability," Fine said.
