AGA Medical, acquired by St Jude Medical in November 2010, has filed patent infringement lawsuits against Occlutech and Occlutech UK.

AGA Medical alleges that the atrial septal defect (ASD) and patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure/occlusion devices, distributed by Occlutech, violate three key patents used in the St Jude Medical Amplatzer occlusion device platform.

The Amplatzer occlusive device platform is used to treat structural heart defects and vascular abnormalities through minimally invasive transcatheter treatments.

The patent infringement lawsuits seek injunctive relief and monetary damages.

St Jude Medical Cardiovascular Division president Frank Callaghan said from clinical research to important product advancements, AGA Medical and now St Jude Medical, contributed considerably to the success of this marketplace.

"St Jude Medical values the innovations we bring to the industry and will closely protect our intellectual property so we can continue to bring products to the health care professionals we serve worldwide," Callaghan said.
