GE HealthCare has secured US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance for its deep learning-based image processing software Precision DL.

The software is part of the company’s Omni Legend positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) system, which was launched in October 2022.

It adds to GE HealthCare’s Effortless Recon DL portfolio of deep learning-based solutions that also has AIR Recon DL for MRI, Helix DL for X-ray, and TrueFidelity for CT.

According to GE HealthCare, Precision DL has been built with a deep neural network trained on thousands of images generated with various reconstruction methods.

The software’s objective is to deliver image quality performance advantages that are mostly linked to hardware-based Time-of-Flight technology. The benefits include better contrast-to-noise ratio, quantitative accuracy, and contrast recovery.

A study recently published in the European Journal of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging outlined enhancements in feature quantification, image sharpness, and diagnostic value delivered by the software.

The improvement was especially notable in the detectability of lesions and the confidence of diagnoses when using deep learning models trained for Time-of-Flight (ToF) image enhancement to rebuild PET/CT images without ToF information.

GE HealthCare imaging president and CEO Jan Makela said: “One of the main advantages of moving fully into the future of AI and deep learning is making state-of-the-art imaging accessible to more practices, across more care areas than ever before.

“Clinicians are seeing the value of applying deep learning technology to enhance image quality with our multi-modality family of Effortless Recon DL applications, which already includes AIR Recon DL for MR, TrueFidelity for CT, and Helix DL for X-ray.

“Now we are proud to add Precision DL for PET/CT, enabling more precise and personalised care across healthcare systems’ imaging departments.”

GE HealthCare said that the availability of Precision DL with the ultra-high sensitivity, third generation digital detector technology of Omni Legend represents a new era for performance and outcomes of PET/CT.

It transitions from Time-of-Flight technology to the next generation of PET/CT performance and helps clinicians in decoding coincidence events at exceptionally fine resolutions for informed diagnoses and planning of treatment.
