US-based medical technology company GE HealthCare Technologies is expanding bkActiv guidance system into urology, colorectal and pelvic floor surgical procedures.

The bkActiv system is an intraoperative ultrasound imaging solution, developed by BK Medical, a subsidiary of GE HealthCare.

It is designed to provide high-performance ultrasound guidance and facilitates minimal user interaction to help surgeons focus on their patients.

The system features automatic no-touch autogain and advanced algorithms to enhance image quality and enable confident decision-making during surgical procedures, said GE HealthCare.

According to the company, the high-performance imaging system offers detailed real-time surgical visualisation, building on decades of research, real-world use, and user feedback.

The expanded bkActiv system features a portfolio of advanced, specialised, sterilisable transducers, needle guides, and procedure packs.

It comes with a sensitive colour doppler to visualise and measure the speed and direction of blood flow during complex surgical procedures of the prostate, kidney, and bladder.

The upgraded version comes with True-Sense touch technology and Smart Button, which enable surgeons to operate the system with full control during the procedure.

It features an advanced transducer portfolio, and an adjustable monitor mounted on a flexible arm, and comes with a minimal system footprint to be easily integrated into a crowded operating room.

GE HealthCare ultrasound visualisation and surgical guidance general manager Urvi Vyas said: “By expanding the bkActiv system, we are giving physicians the tools they need to provide precise treatment with the ability to see fine details in image guidance, which ultimately may allow for better outcomes for people who require urology, colorectal and pelvic floor procedures.

“We are proud to be the trusted partner for surgeons around the world given our long history of leadership in imaging and innovation.”

In December 2021, GE HealthCare acquired BK Medical to enhance its pre- and post-operative ultrasound capabilities with real-time surgical visualisation technologies from BK Medical.
