Virginia Governor Timothy M. Kaine announced that Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. (Thermo Fisher) will invest $8.9 million to expand in Middletown in Frederick County, creating 50 jobs. The company will add a new medical liquid formula line to its existing operations at its Middletown facility, which produces clinical diagnostics products.
“For over 30 years, Thermo Fisher has thrived as a major employer in Frederick County,” Governor Kaine said. “By investing and expanding in the Commonwealth, Thermo Fisher will create more jobs for working Virginias and reaffirms Virginia’s status as the ‘The Best State for Business.'”
“The Thermo Fisher Middletown facility is one of two Centers of Excellence for our Clinical Diagnostics operations in the U.S.,” said Dr. Yuh-geng Tsay, who heads the company’s Specialty Diagnostics business. “Increased customer demand for the types of products manufactured in Middletown made it a natural choice for expansion, and we’re pleased that agencies and government officials at both the state and local levels worked with us to make this possible.”
The Virginia Economic Development Partnership worked with the Winchester-Frederick County Economic Development Commission to secure the project for Virginia. Governor Kaine approved a $90,000 grant from the Governor’s Opportunity Fund to assist Frederick County with the project. The Virginia Department of Business Assistance will provide training assistance through the Virginia Jobs Investment Program.
