The AbsorbaTack 20 Short absorbable fixation device is combined with Parietex PCO OS mesh that adds no sharps in the OR for a safer surgical environment by the AbsorbaTack Fixation Device and Parietex Composite Open Skirt (PCO OS) Mesh System designed for open ventral hernia repair. The AbsorbaTack 20 Short consists of an easy-to-use 18.5cm short shaft that provides ergonomic access to the defect location and deploys absorbable tacks without the need for piloting sharps. The Parietex PCO OS skirted mesh offers the benefits of fast, strong tissue in-growth from compliant, hydrophilic polyester mesh and a barrier to visceral attachments to the implant through a resorbable porcine collagen film.

“As one of the most performed surgeries in the world, hernia repair is a major area of focus for Covidien,” said Dr. Michael Tarnoff, chief medical affairs officer, Surgical Devices, Covidien. “The AbsorbaTack 20 Short builds on a foundation of technical innovation that began with the launch of the successful AbsorbaTack line in early 2008. This new product rounds out our offering of absorbable fixation products for all types of hernia procedures, including open and laparoscopic ventral and inguinal hernia surgery, which together is changing the way surgeons approach soft tissue repair.”

The new Parietex Lightweight Monofilament Polyester Mesh provides all the clinical advantages of polyester in an elastic, lightweight monofilament knit for rapid tissue in-growth and lasting comfort. Dr. Tarnoff added: “Like many other Covidien products, the Parietex Lightweight Monofilament Polyester Mesh and AbsorbaTack 20 Short were developed in close collaboration with the medical community to create instrumentation that addresses both the procedure-specific and intuitive needs of the surgeon and with the safety and comfort of the patient in mind.”
